Montbard is a small town in the Côte-d’Or department of Burgundy, set along the Brenne River and the Canal de Bourgogne. Its identity is closely tied to the naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who was born there and carried out much of his scientific work in the town. The historic center rises toward Parc Buffon, while the canal and surrounding countryside give Montbard a second character shaped by waterways, industry, and rural Burgundy. The town also serves as a practical base for exploring the wider Montbardois area.

Buffon remains central to Montbard’s cultural identity, alongside fellow naturalist Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton, who was also born in the town. The Musée Buffon explores their work and the development of natural science through collections and exhibitions. Above it, Parc Buffon occupies the site of the former fortress of the Dukes of Burgundy. Surviving features include medieval towers, underground rooms, ramparts, and the church of Saint-Urse. Buffon later transformed the site into gardens and used a small study there while preparing his extensive writings on natural history.

Parc Buffon covers about seven hectares and is arranged across fourteen terraces overlooking Montbard. Visitors can see Buffon’s restored study and the Tour de l’Aubespin, as well as remains of the earlier fortified complex. The Canal de Bourgogne passes through the town, with its towpath now forming part of a cycling route across Burgundy. Nearby sites broaden the area’s appeal, including the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay and the Grande Forge de Buffon, an industrial complex created under Buffon’s direction about seven kilometers from Montbard.

Local food reflects the wider traditions of the Auxois and Burgundy. Époisses, the soft cow’s-milk cheese with a washed orange rind made in the nearby village of the same name, is one of the region’s best-known products. The Montbard tourism office also highlights Saupiquet Montbardois as a local specialty, a meat-based preparation associated specifically with the town. Every Friday morning, Montbard’s covered market brings together regional foods and producers. Other nearby specialties include Anis de Flavigny sweets and wines carrying the Coteaux de l’Auxois geographical indication.
