Nashville is a small town in Brown County, southern Indiana, surrounded by the wooded hills and winding roads of the region. It is best known for its concentration of independent shops, art galleries, craft studios, restaurants, and locally made goods, with much of the commercial district located within a few blocks of the town center. The surrounding countryside is markedly different from Indiana’s flatter agricultural landscapes, with steep ridges, narrow valleys, and forested slopes. Brown County State Park lies just outside town, making Nashville a natural base for exploring the area's forests and scenic countryside.

Art has played an important role in Nashville and the wider Brown County community, particularly through the work of painters who were drawn to the area's wooded hills and changing light. The legacy of artists such as T.C. Steele remains visible at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, where his former home, studio, gardens, and landscape are preserved. Downtown Nashville continues this artistic tradition through galleries, craft shops, studios, and demonstrations. Local culture also includes live music, seasonal festivals, and businesses specializing in handmade furniture, pottery, leather goods, paintings, and other regional crafts.

Brown County State Park is Nashville’s major outdoor attraction and the largest state park in Indiana, covering nearly 16,000 acres. Its landscape contains forested ridges, deep ravines, lakes, and numerous overlooks, including Hesitation Point and Hohen Point. The park offers hiking and mountain-biking trails, horseback riding, fishing at Ogle and Strahl lakes, and a 90-foot fire tower with elevated views across the wooded hills. The Civilian Conservation Corps Trail passes stone bridges, stairways, and retaining walls built into the terrain, adding a historic element to the park’s recreational landscape.

Food in Nashville reflects the small-town character of Brown County, with restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and specialty shops offering both familiar American dishes and locally produced products. The town and surrounding county are also known for wineries, craft beverages, maple products, jams, candies, and other regional foods. A distinctive feature of Nashville is the close relationship between its downtown arts economy and the surrounding landscape: visitors can browse working artists’ studios and independent craft shops before reaching forested hills only a short distance away. This connection between creative work, local commerce, and the countryside has become central to the town’s identity.
