Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city on the northern coast of Africa, bordered by Morocco and facing the Strait of Gibraltar. Although geographically located in North Africa, it is politically part of Spain, making it distinct from Moroccan cities such as Tangier and Tetouan. Its position between the Mediterranean and Atlantic approaches has given Ceuta major strategic importance and created a landscape shaped by European, Moroccan, and Mediterranean influences. The city combines modern urban districts with historic fortifications, a busy port, beaches, and elevated viewpoints overlooking both the surrounding coastline and the Strait.

Ceuta has a notably diverse cultural identity, with Spanish, Moroccan, Arab, Berber, Jewish, and Indian communities contributing to its social fabric. This diversity can be seen in places of worship, food, festivals, and everyday commerce. The city’s historic centre contains the Royal Walls, which form part of a major defensive complex built around the old settlement. The Cathedral of the Assumption and the Sanctuary of Santa María de África are important religious landmarks, while the city’s mosques and Jewish heritage sites reflect its wider multicultural character. Its location has also made Ceuta an important meeting point between Europe and North Africa.

The Royal Walls and the Mediterranean Moat are among Ceuta’s most distinctive landmarks, enclosing parts of the historic city and demonstrating its long defensive role. Mount Hacho rises above the eastern side of Ceuta, providing elevated views toward the Strait of Gibraltar and the European coastline. The city also has several beaches, including Playa del Tarajal and Playa de la Ribera, while the surrounding waters support swimming, diving, and other marine activities. The Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo adds landscaped pools and gardens near the city centre. From the coast, clear weather can reveal the mountains of southern Spain across the Strait.

Ceuta’s food reflects its position between Spain and North Africa, with Spanish and Moroccan traditions appearing alongside Mediterranean seafood. Fish, shellfish, couscous, tajines, tapas, and pastries can all be found across the city, while local markets offer ingredients associated with both sides of the Strait. A distinctive local product is the borrachuelo, a sweet pastry associated with Ceuta’s culinary traditions. The city’s port also plays an important role in its economy and links it by ferry with mainland Spain. Ceuta’s combination of Spanish institutions, North African surroundings, and multicultural neighborhoods makes it an unusual destination at the meeting point of two continents.
