St Kilda is a remote volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, far west of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The group consists of Hirta, Dun, Soay, and Boreray, along with numerous sea stacks and smaller formations. Hirta is the largest island and contains the remains of the former settlement around Village Bay. No permanent civilian population lives on St Kilda today, although conservation workers, researchers, and Ministry of Defence personnel occupy Hirta at various times. The islands are managed by the National Trust for Scotland and form the United Kingdom’s only mixed natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Human settlement on St Kilda extended over thousands of years, producing a distinctive cultural landscape adapted to extreme isolation. The former village on Hirta contains stone houses, cultivation plots, and hundreds of cleits, small dry-stone structures used to store food, peat, and other supplies. The islanders relied heavily on seabirds, farming, and sheep for food and materials, developing specialized knowledge of the surrounding cliffs and sea. The community was evacuated from Hirta in 1930, leaving behind a remarkably well-preserved landscape that documents a way of life no longer practiced on the islands.

St Kilda is particularly important for its wildlife and dramatic volcanic terrain. Hirta has towering sea cliffs, while nearby Stac Lee is among the highest sea stacks in Britain. The archipelago supports enormous colonies of northern gannets, Atlantic puffins, northern fulmars, and other seabirds, with nearly a million birds present during the breeding season. St Kilda is also home to distinctive subspecies of wren and field mouse, as well as a population of Soay sheep that roam freely on Hirta. The surrounding marine environment contains diverse underwater habitats protected as part of the World Heritage Site.

Because St Kilda has no permanent civilian population or conventional visitor infrastructure, food and supplies must be brought by visitors themselves when staying on the islands. Access is dependent on sea and weather conditions, and visits are usually organized through specialist boat operators or organized expeditions. The island’s remote location and fragile archaeological remains require careful management, particularly around the village, cleits, and nesting seabird colonies. The absence of a modern settlement leaves the historic landscape unusually intact, while the combination of abandoned buildings, immense cliffs, seabird colonies, and open Atlantic waters gives St Kilda a distinctive place in Scotland’s cultural and natural heritage.
