Katmai National Park and Preserve lies along Alaska’s remote Pacific coast, shaped by volcanism, glaciers, and deep time. The area gained prominence after the 1912 Novarupta eruption, one of the largest volcanic events of the 20th century, which transformed the landscape and led to the creation of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Long before this, Indigenous peoples relied on the region’s rivers and coastline for subsistence, establishing a human presence tied closely to seasonal cycles.

The park’s landscape is expansive and elemental. Active volcanoes, broad tundra, and braided rivers define the interior, while salmon-filled streams cut through the terrain on their way to the sea. Brown bears gather along these waterways, especially near Brooks River, where wildlife interactions feel raw and unscripted rather than staged.

Katmai’s atmosphere is defined by distance and restraint. Access is limited, movement depends on weather, and human infrastructure remains minimal.
