Göreme is a small town in Türkiye's Cappadocia region, surrounded by a landscape of volcanic rock formations, valleys, and distinctive fairy chimneys. The soft tuff rock was shaped by erosion into pillars, cliffs, and sheltered valleys, while people carved homes, churches, storage rooms, and other spaces directly into the rock. Göreme sits within the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage property. The town's compact center provides access to nearby valleys and archaeological sites, while the surrounding landscape gives the area its distinctive appearance and strong connection between geology and settlement.

Göreme's cultural heritage is closely linked to the Christian communities that established settlements in Cappadocia's rock-cut landscapes. The Göreme Open-Air Museum contains a group of rock-hewn churches and chapels decorated with frescoes, including Tokalı Church, Elmalı Church, and Karanlık Church. Monastic spaces and cave dwellings can also be found in the surrounding valleys. Cappadocia's underground cities and rock-cut settlements demonstrate how communities adapted to the region's soft volcanic stone. Today, local traditions also include pottery, carpet weaving, agriculture, and crafts that are practiced across the wider Cappadocian region.

The valleys around Göreme are among the area's principal attractions, with walking routes passing through orchards, vineyards, rock formations, and narrow passages. Göreme Valley, Rose Valley, Red Valley, and Pigeon Valley each have distinctive geological features and viewpoints. Uçhisar Castle, a natural rock citadel carved with rooms and passages, rises nearby and provides views across Cappadocia. The landscape is also closely associated with hot-air balloon flights, which provide an aerial perspective of the valleys and fairy chimneys. Nearby Çavuşin and the Zelve Open-Air Museum offer further examples of Cappadocia's rock-cut settlements and churches.

Food in Göreme reflects the agricultural traditions of Cappadocia, where vineyards, orchards, wheat, vegetables, and livestock contribute to local cuisine. Testi kebabı is one of the region's best-known dishes, consisting of meat and vegetables slow-cooked inside a sealed clay pot that is opened before serving. Other local foods include mantı, stuffed dumplings usually served with yogurt and sauce, and gözleme, a thin filled flatbread. Cappadocia is also known for its wine production, supported by vineyards growing in the region's volcanic soils. The combination of cave architecture, traditional cooking, vineyards, and unusual rock formations gives Göreme a distinctive regional identity.

Istanbul
Istanbul
Istanbul is a city built on layers of empire. Spanning two continents, it was once the capital of three major empires: Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Visitors walking through the Sultanahmet district can witness this timeline firsthand, from the Roman-era Hippodrome to the Byzantine mosaics of Hagia Sophia, and the towering minarets of the Blue Mosque. At nearby Topkapi Palace, rooms still display the jeweled swords, ceremonial robes, and handwritten Qurans once used by Ottoman sultans.

Cappadocia
Cappadocia
The ancient region of Cappadocia lies in Central Anatolia, between the cities of Nevsehir, Kayseri and Nigde. Here, the traveler finds one of the most fantastic landscapes in the world. Wind and weather have eroded the soft volcanic rock with hundreds of strangely shaped pillars, cones and "fairy chimneys", often very tall, and in every shade from pink through yellow to russet browns.
