Hikkaduwa is a coastal town in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, known for its long sandy shoreline, surf breaks, and protected marine environment. Located along the coast between Colombo and Galle, it has developed around the sea, with beachfront restaurants, guesthouses, surf schools, and dive operators forming an important part of local life. The town is particularly associated with Hikkaduwa National Park, a shallow marine area containing a fringing coral reef close to shore. Its accessible reef and coastal setting have made Hikkaduwa one of Sri Lanka’s best-known seaside destinations.

Hikkaduwa’s identity is closely connected with fishing, surfing, and Buddhist traditions. The offshore Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya, a Buddhist temple situated on a small island, is an important local religious site reached by boat. Hikkaduwa also contains the Tsunami Honganji Vihara, a Buddhist temple and memorial associated with the Indian Ocean tsunami, as well as the Tsunami Photo Museum, which preserves photographs and personal accounts from the disaster. These places add a reflective dimension to a town otherwise strongly associated with recreation and coastal tourism.

The main attraction is Hikkaduwa National Park, a protected marine area with shallow coral reefs, rocky islets, tropical fish, and sea turtles. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat trips provide ways to explore the reef, while several established surf breaks draw surfers to the coastline. The reef has experienced significant environmental damage, including coral loss linked to rising sea temperatures and human activity, making marine conservation an important part of Hikkaduwa’s story. The nearby beaches, including the long stretch around Narigama, provide additional space for swimming, walking, and watching the surf.

Hikkaduwa’s food reflects its coastal setting, with seafood appearing prominently in restaurants along the beach and main road. Fish, prawns, crab, coconut, rice, and Sri Lankan spices are common ingredients, while small cafés and local eateries also serve familiar dishes such as rice and curry, hoppers, and roti. A distinctive feature of Hikkaduwa is how closely its recreational life is tied to the reef: the same shallow coastal waters support fishing, marine wildlife, snorkeling, diving, and surfing. This relationship between the town and the sea remains central to its character.
