Telavi is the administrative center of Georgia’s Kakheti region, located between the Gombori mountain range and the Alazani Valley. The town is known for its connection to winemaking, traditional balconies, and views toward the snow-covered Caucasus Mountains. Streets lined with old plane trees, wine cellars, and market stalls give Telavi a slower pace than the capital city of Tbilisi. It serves as a common base for travelers exploring eastern Georgia’s monasteries, vineyards, and rural villages.

Wine culture shapes much of Telavi’s identity. Families throughout Kakheti continue to use qvevri, large clay vessels buried underground for fermenting and storing wine, following methods recognized by UNESCO as part of Georgia’s intangible cultural heritage. The town is also associated with King Erekle II, whose palace and fortress complex, Batonistsikhe, remains one of Telavi’s main cultural landmarks. Orthodox churches, folk polyphonic singing, and supra dining traditions continue to play an important role in daily and ceremonial life.

Telavi sits in a fertile agricultural landscape filled with vineyards, walnut groves, and orchards. Nearby attractions include the Alaverdi Monastery, the Ikalto Monastery complex, and the forested slopes of the Tsiv-Gombori Range. The Giant Plane Tree in central Telavi is one of the town’s most recognized natural landmarks and has become a meeting point for residents and visitors. Roads from the town lead deeper into Kakheti’s wine villages, many of which contain historic marani wine cellars and family-run guesthouses.

Local food reflects eastern Georgian cooking, with dishes such as mtsvadi grilled meat, khinkali dumplings, churchkhela made from grape must and nuts, and fresh bread baked in clay ovens. Kakhetian wines, especially amber wines produced in qvevri, are central to meals and celebrations. A lesser-known detail is that Telavi was one of the first places in Georgia to develop organized wine tourism around family cellars, allowing visitors to observe small-scale wine production directly inside village homes and courtyards.
