Ypres, officially known by its Dutch name Ieper, is a compact city in West Flanders, close to Belgium’s border with France. Its center is defined by the Grote Markt, a broad market square lined with traditional façades and dominated by the Cloth Hall and its tall belfry. Although Ypres is closely associated with the First World War, it is also a working Flemish city with shops, cafés, museums, churches, and streets contained partly within old fortifications. The surrounding countryside is largely flat, with farmland, villages, cemeteries, and memorial sites.

Local identity is inseparable from remembrance. The Menin Gate bears the names of Commonwealth servicemen who have no known grave, and the Last Post Association organizes the Last Post ceremony beneath the memorial every evening. The Cloth Hall, once central to the city’s prosperous textile trade, now houses the In Flanders Fields Museum, which examines the First World War through personal stories, objects, photographs, and interactive displays. Ypres also retains strong Flemish traditions, reflected in its Dutch language, regional architecture, beer culture, and annual events such as the Kattenstoet, or Cat Parade.

The Grote Markt provides the main architectural focus, with the reconstructed Cloth Hall and Belfry forming one of Belgium’s best-known civic complexes. The belfry is included within UNESCO’s Belfries of Belgium and France World Heritage property. Nearby, St Martin’s Cathedral rises above the historic center, while the Vauban ramparts form a green route around part of the city. Beyond Ypres, major remembrance sites include Tyne Cot Cemetery near Passchendaele, Essex Farm Cemetery, Hill 60, and preserved sections of battlefield landscape.

West Flemish food gives Ypres another side beyond its memorial landscape. Menus commonly feature Belgian staples such as fries, croquettes, waffles, and dishes cooked with regional beer, while local breweries and cafés reflect the wider brewing culture of West Flanders. One especially unusual Ypres tradition is the Kattenstoet, a large procession built around cats, folklore, costumes, floats, and performances. Its imagery relates to older local stories about cats and the Cloth Hall, giving the city a distinctive civic tradition that sits alongside its textile heritage and international role as a center of remembrance.
