Staniel Cay is a small island in the Exuma Cays of The Bahamas, surrounded by clear shallow waters, coral reefs, sandy beaches, and numerous nearby cays. The island covers less than two square miles and has a small Bahamian village on its western shore. Its position makes it a useful base for exploring the surrounding Exumas by boat, while a local airstrip provides another way to reach the island. Staniel Cay is closely associated with boating, fishing, snorkeling, diving, and the marine environment that surrounds the Exuma Cays.

Staniel Cay has a small, close-knit Bahamian community with local homes, a church, shops, a library, and marine services. Fishing and boating have long been important to island life, while the Staniel Cay Yacht Club has served as a gathering place for residents and visiting boaters. The community also has a notable tradition of local initiative, reflected in St. Luke’s Clinic, which was established through community efforts to provide healthcare on the island. Today, Bahamian traditions remain visible alongside the island’s role as a stopping point for visitors exploring the Exumas.

Thunderball Grotto is one of Staniel Cay’s best-known attractions, located just west of the island. The underwater cave system has a small entrance and contains coral reefs and tropical fish, making it a popular place for snorkeling and diving. Nearby Big Major Cay is known for its swimming pigs, while the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park protects extensive marine and coastal habitats farther north. The surrounding waters also offer opportunities for boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and visiting secluded beaches and sandbars. Staniel Cay’s location places several of the Exumas’ notable sites within easy reach by boat.

Seafood is central to dining on Staniel Cay, with conch, fish, lobster, and other marine products reflecting the island’s coastal setting. Local specialties associated with the area include conch fritters and the Staniel Cay lime pie. The island is also distinctive for its connection to film history: Thunderball Grotto was used as a filming location for the James Bond film Thunderball, as well as Never Say Never Again. With its small village, working marina, surrounding reefs, and easy access to nearby cays, Staniel Cay provides a compact base for experiencing the wider Exuma island chain.
