Puerto Blest is a remote destination within Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentina’s Río Negro Province, set at the western end of Lago Nahuel Huapi near the border with Chile. Surrounded by dense Andean-Patagonian forest, steep mountains, and clear waterways, it has a more secluded character than the resort city of Bariloche. Puerto Blest is most commonly reached by boat across Lago Nahuel Huapi, making the journey itself an important part of the experience. Its location at the meeting point of lake, forest, and mountains provides access to one of the most distinctive landscapes in the park.

The area around Puerto Blest has long been connected with the Indigenous peoples of the region, particularly the Mapuche, whose cultural heritage remains important throughout northern Patagonia. European exploration and later settlement added new layers to the area's history, while the creation of Nahuel Huapi National Park helped establish a framework for protecting its forests, lakes, and wildlife. Nearby Cascada Los Cántaros is named for its series of waterfalls and is reached by a forest trail with wooden steps. The area also contains traces of early transport routes linking Argentina's lake district with the Chilean side of the Andes.

Puerto Blest provides access to several natural attractions within Nahuel Huapi National Park. Lago Frías, known for its greenish-blue water, lies beyond the forest and can be reached from Puerto Blest by road or organized excursion. The Río Frías flows from the surrounding mountains toward the lake, while Cascada Los Cántaros drops through dense vegetation before reaching Lago Nahuel Huapi. Boat trips commonly combine Puerto Blest with Lago Frías and the waterfall, offering views of wooded slopes and mountain peaks. The surrounding forest contains coihue, lenga, and arrayán trees, while wildlife includes foxes, pudús, huemuls, and numerous bird species.

Food options at Puerto Blest are limited because of its protected and remote setting, with most visitors eating at the lodge or carrying provisions as part of an organized excursion. Meals in the wider Bariloche region reflect Patagonian traditions, including trout, lamb, wild berries, mushrooms, and locally produced chocolate. The area is also known for craft beer and regional wines. One distinctive feature of Puerto Blest is its rainfall: the western part of Nahuel Huapi receives substantially more precipitation than the drier areas around Bariloche, helping sustain the dense Valdivian-influenced forest. This wetter climate gives the landscape a distinctly different appearance within the park.
