Cayos Cochinos is a small archipelago in the Caribbean Sea off the northern coast of Honduras, located northwest of La Ceiba. The protected area consists of two larger forested islands, Cayo Menor and Cayo Grande, surrounded by numerous smaller coral cays. Clear Caribbean waters, sandy beaches, tropical vegetation, and offshore reefs define the landscape. Cayos Cochinos forms part of the Mesoamerican Reef system and is protected as a marine natural monument and biological reserve. Access is primarily by boat, with trips commonly departing from La Ceiba or nearby coastal communities.

The islands are closely connected to the Garífuna communities living along the nearby mainland coast. Garífuna culture is expressed through music, dance, language, fishing traditions, and cuisine, with seafood and coconut playing important roles in local cooking. Conservation programs in Cayos Cochinos involve local communities in decisions concerning fishing, tourism, and protection of marine resources. The area also has a long-standing scientific presence, including a research station on Cayo Menor. These connections between marine conservation, scientific study, and local communities form an important part of the identity of the archipelago.

The marine environment is the main attraction of Cayos Cochinos, with coral reefs, seagrass beds, sandy seabeds, and mangrove habitats supporting a wide variety of species. Snorkeling and diving provide access to shallow reef areas where tropical fish, corals, and other marine organisms can be observed. On land, forested slopes and small beaches cover the larger islands, while trails offer views of the surrounding cays and Caribbean waters. The reserve also provides habitat for sea turtles and the distinctive Cayos Cochinos boa, a pinkish-colored boa found on the islands and recognized as a local conservation priority.

Seafood is central to the food traditions of the coastal communities associated with Cayos Cochinos, with fish, shellfish, coconut, and plantains commonly used in Garífuna cooking. Hudut, a dish combining fish with mashed green and ripe plantains and a coconut-based sauce, is particularly associated with Garífuna cuisine along the Honduran Caribbean coast. The archipelago itself has limited development compared with larger Caribbean islands, and its protected status places strong emphasis on conservation. Its combination of coral reefs, small forested islands, Garífuna cultural connections, and controlled access makes Cayos Cochinos a distinctive destination on Honduras's Caribbean coast.
