Exuma is a long chain of islands and cays in the central Bahamas, stretching through clear Atlantic waters southeast of New Providence. The district includes Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and hundreds of smaller cays, with George Town serving as the main settlement and administrative centre. The islands are characterized by white-sand beaches, shallow turquoise banks, limestone landscapes, mangroves, and sheltered bays. Exuma's extensive coastline and protected waters support fishing, boating, sailing, and tourism, while inland areas contain scrub, wetlands, salt ponds, and small agricultural communities.

Exuma's culture is closely connected to the sea, with fishing, boatbuilding, farming, and seafaring forming important parts of community life. Great and Little Exuma also preserve traditions associated with salt production, plantation agriculture, and Loyalist settlement. The Pompey Monument in George Town commemorates the role of an enslaved man in the struggle surrounding emancipation, while the Salt Beacon on Little Exuma reflects the island's former salt industry. Bahamian traditions remain visible through music, storytelling, church communities, local festivals, and foods based on seafood and crops. The district also has strong connections to traditional Bahamian sailing and regatta culture.

Exuma is known for its extensive marine environment, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, sandbars, and deep channels. Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park protects a large area of these habitats and supports conch, lobster, reef fish, sea turtles, rays, sharks, and many seabirds. Stocking Island, opposite George Town, is known for beaches, trails, blowholes, and the endangered hutia, a small native mammal. Other notable locations include Thunderball Grotto, a network of marine caves near Staniel Cay, and the shallow sandbanks where swimming pigs have become a well-known attraction. Sailing and snorkeling are particularly suited to the area's sheltered waters.

Food in Exuma reflects Bahamian cooking, with conch, grouper, snapper, lobster, crab, and other seafood commonly served alongside peas and rice, johnnycake, grits, and fresh vegetables. Conch salad and cracked conch are especially associated with the islands, while locally grown produce and fruit add variety to meals. A distinctive feature of Exuma is the contrast between its small settlements and extensive uninhabited cays, many of which can be reached only by boat. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park also represents an important conservation area where fishing restrictions help protect marine habitats and replenish fish populations across the surrounding waters.
