Dunedin is a coastal city on Florida’s Gulf Coast in Pinellas County, positioned along St. Joseph Sound and surrounded by barrier islands, beaches, and waterways. Its compact downtown is known for independent shops, restaurants, breweries, galleries, and a walkable main street, while the Pinellas Trail provides a popular route for cycling and walking through the community. Dunedin also has a strong connection to baseball, serving as the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays. Its waterfront location and access to nearby islands give the city a distinctly coastal setting.

Dunedin’s cultural identity reflects both its Scottish heritage and its long Gulf Coast history. The city hosts the annual Dunedin Highland Games & Festival, which features Scottish music, dancing, athletics, and traditional competitions. The Dunedin Historical Museum preserves local stories and collections covering Indigenous history, early settlement, transportation, and community life. Dunedin also has a strong arts presence, with the Dunedin Fine Art Center providing exhibitions, classes, and workshops. Scottish influence is visible in the city’s events, organizations, and symbols, making it one of the more distinctive cultural traditions in the Tampa Bay region.

Honeymoon Island State Park lies just west of Dunedin and protects more than four miles of beach along with one of the remaining stands of native slash pine forest in the area. The park supports ospreys, eagles, gopher tortoises, shorebirds, and other wildlife, while its beaches are used for swimming, fishing, shelling, and walking. A ferry from Honeymoon Island provides access to Caladesi Island State Park, where mangrove waterways, sandy beaches, and a nature trail lead to the historic Scharrer Homestead. The Dunedin Causeway also provides access to St. Joseph Sound and popular spots for paddling and fishing.

Dunedin’s dining scene includes Gulf Coast seafood, craft breweries, cafes, and independent restaurants concentrated around the downtown area. Fresh fish, shrimp, oysters, and other seafood appear alongside cuisines influenced by the city’s diverse population. The city’s craft beer culture is particularly notable, with local breweries contributing to its reputation as a small-scale brewing destination. One distinctive local detail is the Dunedin Blue Jays connection: TD Ballpark serves as the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays and also hosts the team’s minor-league affiliate. Dunedin’s combination of Scottish traditions, baseball, breweries, and nearby barrier islands gives it a recognizable identity within Florida’s Gulf Coast.
