Chiconi is a coastal commune on the western side of Grande-Terre, the main island of Mayotte. It faces the island’s broad lagoon and includes the neighboring village of Sohoa, with the coastline shaped by beaches, mangroves, and sheltered bays. Chiconi has a strong connection to fishing and maritime activity, while its location provides views across the lagoon toward nearby islands. The town is also known for its traditional outrigger fishing boats, called ngalawa, which remain a familiar sight along the coast. Its waterfront setting gives Chiconi a distinctly local character within western Mayotte.

Chiconi’s cultural identity is closely connected to the Comorian traditions shared across Mayotte. Islam is an important part of community life, while local customs are expressed through family gatherings, music, dance, food, and religious celebrations. The town’s traditional ngalawa boats reflect the long relationship between coastal communities and the lagoon. Fishing has traditionally been an important livelihood, and the waterfront remains a place where marine activity can be observed. Chiconi also has connections with Mayotte’s traditional craft practices, including the construction and use of wooden boats for fishing and transport.

The lagoon and surrounding coastline provide the main natural attractions around Chiconi. Its waterfront offers views across calm tropical waters, with the islands of the lagoon visible offshore. Nearby Sohoa is known for its beach and coastal setting, while mangrove areas provide habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife. The surrounding hills are covered with tropical vegetation and cultivated plots, reflecting the island’s volcanic terrain. Boat trips using traditional ngalawa can provide access to the lagoon, while the western coast is also suitable for observing sunsets and marine life from the shore.

Chiconi’s food culture reflects Mayotte’s Indian Ocean location, with fish, rice, coconut, cassava, bananas, spices, and tropical fruit appearing regularly in local meals. Seafood is especially important in coastal communities, where freshly caught fish can be prepared with coconut-based or spiced sauces and served with rice or vegetables. The town’s waterfront and market areas provide opportunities to see local produce and everyday trade. One of Chiconi’s distinctive features is its continuing association with ngalawa boats, which are not simply traditional objects but practical vessels that connect the community with the surrounding lagoon.
