Atlantic City

Atlantic City, New Jersey is more than bright casinos and lively boardwalk, it’s a coastal city with stories stretching back over 150 years. Once a fashionable 19th-century resort town, Atlantic City introduced the first boardwalk in the United States in 1870. Today, it remains the city’s centerpiece, stretching over 5 miles along the beach, lined with shops, arcades, and a mix of vintage charm and modern attractions. Steel Pier, one of the boardwalk’s historic landmarks, now offers thrill rides, carnival games, and oceanfront views from a towering observation wheel.

The city's cultural layers run deeper than most expect. The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey offers an important perspective on local history, while Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, originally built in 1929, still hosts concerts, sports events, and the famous Miss America pageant. Inside the hall is the world’s largest musical instrument, the Boardwalk Hall pipe organ, boasting over 33,000 pipes. Free tours and recitals offer curious visitors a chance to hear a sound unlike anything else on the East Coast.

For those looking to explore Atlantic City beyond the gaming floors, the Absecon Lighthouse offers both history and height. Built in 1857, it’s New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse, and after climbing 228 steps, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the city and coastline. At Gardner’s Basin, just off the inlet, guests can tour the Atlantic City Aquarium, watch boats from the marina, or take a dolphin cruise during warmer months. This quieter side of the city adds a more relaxed pace to a weekend itinerary.
