Birmingham

Birmingham, Alabama is a city that offers travelers a chance to experience Southern culture that’s both deeply rooted and constantly evolving. Known as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement, the city features landmarks like the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church, where pivotal moments in American history unfolded. The adjacent Kelly Ingram Park uses life-size sculptures to tell powerful stories of protest and resilience, making a walk through the area both moving and unforgettable.

But Birmingham isn’t just about its past, it’s also one of the South’s rising cultural centers. The downtown district buzzes with public art, independent bookstores, and performance venues like the historic Alabama Theatre, a restored 1927 movie palace that still hosts classic film nights and live shows under its glittering marquee. Sidewalk Film Center & Cinema brings indie films to the city year-round, while annual events like the Sidewalk Film Festival attract moviegoers and filmmakers from across the country.

The city’s natural surroundings are equally compelling. Just minutes from downtown, Red Mountain Park stretches across 1,500 acres of forested land, with ziplines, hiking trails, and remnants of old mining structures that hint at Birmingham’s industrial roots. For sweeping views of the skyline, visitors can head to Vulcan Park, home to the largest cast-iron statue in the world. Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge, stands watch over the city, symbolizing its early steel industry and continued spirit of reinvention.
