Hoonah, located on Chichagof Island in southeastern Alaska, is a small coastal community surrounded by breathtaking wilderness and rich Tlingit heritage. As Alaska’s largest Tlingit village, Hoonah is deeply connected to Indigenous traditions, storytelling, and respect for the natural world. The town’s name, derived from the Tlingit word “Xunniyaa,” means “where the north wind doesn’t blow,” reflecting its sheltered position along the Icy Strait.

The area’s landscapes are defined by dense temperate rainforests, snow-capped peaks, and abundant wildlife. Humpback whales, sea otters, and bald eagles are common sights along the coast, while brown bears roam the nearby forests. A short distance from town lies Icy Strait Point, a restored 1912 salmon cannery turned cultural and adventure hub, where visitors can learn about the region’s fishing history, experience traditional Tlingit performances, or embark on whale-watching and zipline excursions.

Hoonah’s atmosphere blends small-town warmth with deep cultural roots. Locals take pride in sharing their heritage through carving, weaving, and dance, offering visitors a genuine connection to Alaska’s Indigenous traditions.
