Kilkenny

Kilkenny is a city where history sits beside everyday life, and stories from centuries past shape the streets visitors walk today. At its heart stands Kilkenny Castle, first built in the 12th century and home to the Butler family for more than 600 years. Touring its furnished rooms and riverside gardens offers a clear view of how power, politics, and daily routines evolved over time. From here, the Medieval Mile creates a natural path through the city, linking key sites such as St. Canice’s Cathedral. Its round tower, one of the few in Ireland still open to climb, rewards visitors with wide views across the rooftops and the River Nore.

Moving beyond stone walls and towers, Kilkenny’s creative side comes into focus. The Kilkenny Design Centre highlights Irish craftsmanship through ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and woodwork made by local designers. Just a short walk away, the National Design & Craft Gallery presents changing exhibitions that explore modern ideas through traditional skills. Nearby, the Butler Gallery adds another layer, showing Irish and international art in a restored historic building that connects past and present in a quiet, thoughtful way.

The city’s long story also unfolds in its smaller spaces. Rothe House & Garden, a group of late 16th-century merchant houses, gives insight into how wealthy trading families once lived, complete with courtyards and an orchard. Not far from there, the Kilkenny Farmers Market brings together growers, bakers, and food producers from across the county. Held weekly, it offers a chance to sample local cheeses, fresh bread, and seasonal produce while seeing how local food traditions continue to thrive.
