Saint John is a historic port city on the Bay of Fundy in southern New Brunswick, built around a rugged harbour where the Saint John River meets the sea. Its waterfront, steep streets, and compact historic districts reflect a long connection with shipping, shipbuilding, fishing, and trade. Uptown Saint John contains rows of brick and stone buildings, independent shops, restaurants, galleries, and public spaces, while the Reversing Falls area shows the powerful influence of the Bay of Fundy's tides. The city also serves as a gateway to coastal communities, islands, parks, and scenic landscapes throughout southern New Brunswick.

Saint John's history includes deep connections to the Wolastoqiyik, whose traditional territory follows the Saint John River, as well as later French and British settlement. The city became an important Loyalist settlement and developed into a major maritime center. The Great Fire that destroyed much of the city led to extensive rebuilding, leaving behind a distinctive collection of Victorian-era architecture. Today, the New Brunswick Museum and Loyalist House interpret different aspects of the region's past, while the historic Trinity Royal district preserves streetscapes and buildings associated with Saint John's commercial and residential development.

The Reversing Falls are among Saint John's best-known natural features, created as powerful Bay of Fundy tides interact with the Saint John River and the narrow rocky channel. Nearby Fallsview Park provides viewpoints over the rapids and surrounding landscape. Uptown Saint John offers attractions including the New Brunswick Museum, Saint John City Market, Loyalist House, and the Imperial Theatre. Rockwood Park covers a large area of lakes, forests, trails, and recreational facilities within the city. Fundy National Park lies farther east along the bay, offering coastal cliffs, forests, waterfalls, hiking trails, and access to the region's exceptionally large tidal range.

Saint John's food culture reflects its coastal location and New Brunswick's agricultural and maritime traditions. Seafood is prominent, with lobster, scallops, clams, mussels, and Atlantic fish appearing on local menus, while traditional dishes such as fiddleheads and dulse connect the cuisine to regional ingredients. The Saint John City Market is a longstanding place to find produce, baked goods, meats, seafood, and prepared foods from local vendors. Another distinctive feature is the city's relationship with the Bay of Fundy, whose tides can change water levels dramatically and influence both the harbour and the nearby Reversing Falls. This tidal setting remains central to Saint John's geography and working waterfront.
