Kaikoura

Kaikōura is a coastal town on New Zealand’s South Island where the mountains seem to rise straight from the Pacific and meet the sea in ways that take many visitors by surprise. Its name in the Māori language means “meal of crayfish,” a nod to the rich seafood that has fed people here for more than a thousand years.

What sets Kaikōura apart are the extraordinary marine encounters that begin just off the shoreline. The Kaikōura Canyon, an underwater gorge that plunges to great depths close to land, creates currents rich with nutrients that attract a remarkable array of sea life year-round. Sperm whales, some of the largest toothed whales on Earth, are a common sight here and are frequently spotted on boat tours that depart from the town center. Dusky dolphins twist and leap in large pods, and colonies of New Zealand fur seals laze on rocky outcrops along the coast.

On land, the Seaward Kaikōura Range rises sharply behind the town, its peaks soaring over 2,600 meters and visible from the waterfront. Walking routes, such as the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, lead out to seal colonies, sea caves, limestone formations, and lookout points that open onto wide-angle views of both sea and mountains. This combination of coastal and alpine landscape creates a backdrop for both peaceful strolls and more ambitious hikes.
