Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is the historic district of Panama City, set on a small peninsula beside the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Its streets preserve a colonial urban layout with plazas, churches, former convents, defensive walls, and narrow buildings featuring Spanish and French architectural influences. Plaza de la Independencia forms the district’s central square, beside the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria la Antigua and other important landmarks. Along the waterfront, sections of the old fortifications overlook the bay, while streets such as Avenida Central connect the historic quarter with the surrounding city. Casco Viejo is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
