Ballarat is a regional city in central Victoria, known for its goldfields heritage, grand streetscapes, gardens, and strong arts scene. Located about 90 minutes from Melbourne by road or rail, it combines a historic city centre with lakes, parks, and surrounding rural landscapes. Sturt Street forms the main civic spine, lined with substantial nineteenth-century buildings, shops, cafés, and public spaces. Ballarat’s identity is closely linked to the gold discoveries that transformed the district, while contemporary galleries, markets, restaurants, and creative businesses give the city a strong cultural presence.

Ballarat stands on the traditional Country of the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung peoples, whose connections to the land continue today. The city’s goldfields history is reflected in places such as Sovereign Hill, a living museum that recreates a gold-mining settlement with underground tours, historic trades, period buildings, and demonstrations. The Eureka Centre also explores the Eureka Stockade story and its role in Australian political history. Ballarat’s built heritage includes the Ballarat Town Hall, historic churches, and ornate commercial buildings, while Her Majesty’s Theatre remains an important performing arts venue.

Lake Wendouree provides a major open space near the centre of Ballarat, with a six-kilometre walking and running track, rowing facilities, sailing, fishing, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Beside the lake, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens contain extensive cool-climate plantings and formal garden areas. The Ballarat Wildlife Park offers encounters with kangaroos, koalas, wombats, emus, and other native animals, while Mount Buninyong rises above the surrounding district as an extinct volcanic landmark. Beyond the city, the Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail follows a former railway route through farmland, grassland, and small historic settlements.

Ballarat has a growing food culture shaped by nearby farms, producers, and cool-climate conditions. Local markets feature regional vegetables, baked goods, cheeses, preserves, and other products, while cafés and restaurants occupy many of the city’s historic streets. Sovereign Hill is known for its handcrafted raspberry drops, an unusual local treat associated with the attraction’s recreated goldfields setting. The city also has a strong connection with craft and folk art and is recognised by UNESCO as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. This creative identity appears in galleries, studios, workshops, and community events across Ballarat.
