Surabaya is the capital of East Java and one of Indonesia’s largest urban centers, located on the northeastern coast of Java beside the Madura Strait. It is known as the “City of Heroes,” a name linked to the city’s strong association with Indonesia’s independence struggle and the identity of its residents, known as arek Suroboyo. Surabaya also has an important commercial and maritime character, with its port supporting trade and connecting the city with other parts of Indonesia. Its broad streets, busy commercial districts, historic neighborhoods, and modern developments reflect its role as a major regional center.

Surabaya’s cultural identity reflects its long history as a trading port where different communities established neighborhoods and commercial centers. The Kota Lama Surabaya heritage district is divided into European, Chinese, Arab, and Malay zones, with historic buildings and streets that preserve traces of these communities. Tugu Pahlawan and the Museum Sepuluh Nopember are closely associated with the city’s role in Indonesia’s independence struggle and remain important places for understanding local history. Traditional performances, community gatherings, and foods associated with Surabaya further express the distinctive identity of the city.

The city offers a range of urban and waterfront attractions. Tugu Pahlawan is a prominent monument, while House of Sampoerna occupies a heritage building and presents exhibits about Indonesia’s kretek cigarette industry. The historic Jembatan Merah and surrounding Kota Tua provide architectural landmarks connected with Surabaya’s trading past. Along the coast, Kenjeran offers recreation beside the Madura Strait, while Surabaya North Quay provides views across the harbor. The city also has green public spaces and waterways, including areas along the Kalimas that can be explored by boat.

Surabaya has a distinctive food culture shaped by East Javanese traditions. Local specialties include rawon, a dark beef soup flavored with keluak; rujak cingur, a salad combining vegetables, fruit, and sliced beef snout with a rich petis-based sauce; and lontong balap, a dish of rice cakes, bean sprouts, tofu, and lentho. Semanggi Surabaya, made with steamed clover leaves and served with a savory peanut-based sauce, is another local specialty. These dishes are commonly found in traditional food stalls and markets, giving visitors an accessible way to experience Surabaya’s culinary identity.
