Rhinebeck is a village in Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley, set among rolling farmland, wooded hills, and communities along the eastern side of the Hudson River. Its compact center is known for historic buildings, independent shops, restaurants, galleries, and the long-established Beekman Arms. The surrounding town extends toward the river through rural landscapes and the hamlet of Rhinecliff, where rail service connects the area with destinations along the Hudson. Rhinebeck combines a well-preserved village setting with nearby estates, farms, cultural attractions, and scenic roads that make it a notable destination in the Hudson Valley.

Rhinebeck has deep connections to the Sepasco people and the wider Indigenous history of the Hudson Valley, followed by Dutch settlement and the development of farming communities. The village grew around important roads and crossroads that connected the Hudson River with inland settlements. Its historic district contains numerous preserved homes, churches, commercial buildings, and public structures that reflect this development. Rhinebeck was also once known for commercial violet growing, with greenhouses and farms supplying flowers to markets well beyond the region. Today, local history is preserved through the Museum of Rhinebeck History, walking tours, historic properties, and community traditions.

Wilderstein Historic Site is one of Rhinebeck’s most notable attractions, with a Victorian mansion, landscaped grounds, walking trails, and views toward the Hudson River. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome offers another distinctive experience, displaying historic aircraft and automobiles and presenting flying demonstrations. In the village, visitors can explore the Rhinebeck Historic District on foot, while nearby Rhinecliff provides access to the river and railroad station. The surrounding countryside includes farms, wooded trails, and country roads, and the Dutchess County Fairgrounds hosts agricultural, craft, and cultural events that draw visitors from throughout the Hudson Valley.

Rhinebeck’s food culture reflects the farms and producers of the surrounding Hudson Valley, with restaurants featuring locally grown vegetables, cheeses, meats, apples, maple products, and other regional ingredients. The village has a concentration of independent restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and specialty food shops within an easily walkable area. The Rhinebeck Farmers’ Market brings local farmers and producers into the village, while nearby vineyards, breweries, and farm stands add further choices throughout the surrounding countryside. A distinctive detail of Rhinebeck’s history is its former reputation as a major violet-growing center, a reminder of the agricultural industries that once shaped the local economy.
